PLAINS HOGNOSE SNAKE

Area where the plains hognose snake can be found in South Dakota

Characteristics:

* Sharply upturned snout

* Dark blotches along center and sides of body

* Belly and underside of the tail blackish

* Keeled scales

* Nonvenomous (mildly venomous to its prey)

* Diet: frogs, toads, salamanders, and small
mammals

* Habitat: prairies with sand or gravel/floodplains

* Distribution: statewide
